Tired of the same old lifestyle? We think it's time for a break! Pack your bags, get your car's oil and air levels checked and get set for a refreshing getaway from the boring monotony of city life. If where to go is a question you are asking, here are the answers:

Summer Getaways

Beat the Chennai heat with a quick trip to one of these places, and come back with recharged batteries.

1. Kodaikanal

Those looking for a romantic trip, read on:

Lovingly called the South Indian Nainital, Kodaikanal is just the whiff of fresh air you need. Literally meaning "Gift of the Forest", Kodaikanal is studded with numerous churches, a gorgeous lake and countless chocolate shops. Take down an eagle or too at the Kodaikanal Golf Club, splash about in a waterfall or simply soak in all the scenic beauty.

It is pretty easy to reach Kodaikanal from Chennai, thanks to the numerous means of travel available.

2. Ooty

If you are in the mood for some family fun, Ooty is the place to be.

The beautiful conglomeration of lush green grasslands, towering mountains, silvery waterfalls and beauteous lakes, Ooty truly sticks to the nickname of Queen of Hills. Pick fresh tea leaves or loose yourself in the towering forests, let the lake waters softly rock your boat or just take long walks and rediscover an all new you in the lap of nature.

Ooty is about 550 km from Chennai.

3. Yercaud

Can't splurge this holiday? No problemo! Head to Yercaud for a pocket friendly getaway!

With its rugged mountains cradling a serene lake, Yercaud makes for one hill station that will blow your mind. Endlessly sprawling orange and coffee plantations spell this charming hill station near Chennai, which also has numerous parks, viewing points, waterfalls and caves to offer you the thrill of exploration. Don't forget to throw in those walking shoes when packing for Yercaud.

Yercaud is about 360 km from Chennai, making for a scenic drive of about 7 hours.

4. Yelagiri Hills

The dream land of adventure lovers, Yelagiri calls out to you for a fun filled break.

If you are one of those whose eyes  are always looking for uncharted territory, Yelagiri is just the place you want to head to. Pleasantly free of commercialisation which a lot of hill stations ail from, the place is also the perfect place to get those postcard perfect shots. Do pick the YMCA Honey available when here.

Chennai to Yelagiri is a distance of about 230 km.

Winter Getaways

1. Mahabalipuram

If one place is fit for fun, sun and calm, it has to be this one!

The beautiful land of Mahabalipuram is a place where you can enjoy the spiritual solace of temples and soak up the sun at the scenic beaches as well! Pull out your best lenses and take home breathtaking shots of the Shore Temple, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The numerous restaurants around the place give you another reason to head here for a quick holiday!

It is pretty easy to cover the 55km distance from Chennai to Mahabalipuram.

2. Kanchipuram

Find some spiritual peace away from the maddening city life at Kanchipuram.

Considered as one of the most pious places among the seven sacred cities in India, Kanchipuram boasts of many beautiful temples that attracts pilgrims to the place. The place is very near to your home, so you don't even have the hassle of travelling for hours to get there! Find out how to get from Chennai to Kanchipuram.

3. Pondicherry

This merry blend of East and West manages to please everybody!

Fine dining, leisurely walks, an old world feel and total relaxation spell a holiday in Pondicherry. What's more, you can also go scuba diving when here and then enjoy a massage to soothe your muscles! Sounds like a good plan to spend a Sunday, right?

Chennai to Pondicherry is a distance of 160 km that is pretty easy to cover.

1. Krishnagiri

How about a trip away from the crowds, exploring places unheard of? Head to Krishnagiri!

An old fort, a scenic dam, countless trekking trails and miles away from hordes of tourists - this sums up a trip to Krishnagiri. Relax and unwind in the company of peace and quiet, read the book you have been longing to and go home with renewed energy.

Krishnagiri is about 250 km from Chennai and enjoys great connectivity.

2. Hosur

A laid back town with lots of scenic beauty to offer, Hosur is a refreshing break from the honking and traffic that is a staple of city life. Explore the numerous temples here, take long walks in the surrounding plantations or take a quick trick to the Hogennakal Falls when here.

There are multiple ways of covering the distance of 305 km from Chennai to Hosur.

3. Shivanasamudra

IMHO, this picture is enough to lure one to Shivanasamudra for a refreshing weekend getaway! And this isn't the only waterfall! Unwind in the lap of nature and be witness to numerous beautiful sights, roam through dense forests and discover small temples shrouded in mystery.

Being a little far from Chennai at 500 km, Shivanasamudra is a better option for the longer weekends!

Now that you have so many choices, you have no reason stay home this weekend! Zip to one of these places, 'kyuki break banta hai!'.

If you're historically, heritage inclined person, you can go on a ' Mahendra Trail'. Mahendra Verma Pallava was the first person to build temples out of rocks. What we see in Mahabalipuram is by his son, Narasimha Verma Pallava. Earliest rock cut temples in south India were by Mahendra Verma Pallava. A Mahendra Trail would touch some of those early rock-cut cave temples...
