  • Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary
Located at the confluence of Mandovi and Mapusa rivers, the bird sanctuary supports rich mangrove forests and is famous for a large variety of birds, flying foxes, jackals, crocodiles, turtles, and coastal wildlife. Perched on the western tip of Chorao Island, Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is one of the few places in the country where you can spot a huge variety of local and migratory birds. A maze of water channels makes its way through this mangrove, giving the place a picturesque quality that is beyond description. Now, the questions that arises is how to reach there. So, for that, you can book a cab, an auto or a bus till the Ribandar ferry dock and then a ferry across the Mandovi River to the island. The Sanctuary is situated very close to the ferry dock and identified with a signboard.

You will have to pay for an entry fee of INR 50 per Adult to get into the sanctuary. There are extra charges of INR 50 payable if you want to take a camera along. However, these charges are only applicable for a km of walkway into the mangrove forest which ends up in a dock where you can look at some of the amazing birds crossing. From there, you will have to take a boat to take you around the sanctuary. This will cost you around INR 75 per head or INR 900 (for 12 people) if you want to take the boat all for yourself. The best time to visit the sanctuary is early morning and late evening because that is the time when you can a see lot of birds.

  • Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary
Located around 52 km away from Panaji, this beautiful natural treat in the foothills of Western Ghats is one of the best attractions in Goa for wildlife lovers! The small sanctuary draws adults and children alike and features a Zoological Park, Rose Gardens, a Deer Safari Park and Nature Trails providing the opportunity to spend a quiet day in the lap of nature when in Goa. Many people travel to the attraction by their own vehicle or by hired taxis which can be a little costly. You can enjoy decent food at the small restaurants within the sanctuary premises. The sanctuary is a site for wildlife such as Sambar, Gaur (Indian Bison), Wild Boar and frequent visits from elephants.

  • Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary
A Panjim to Canacona cab can help you reach the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary. Often noted for its wide range of animal and plant biodiversity, Cotigao features some of the lesser-known animals such as the flying squirrel, slender loris, Indian pangolin, velvet-fronted nuthatch, heart-spotted woodpecker, speckled piculet, mouse deer, four-horned antelope, Malabar trogon, Malayan bittern, draco or flying lizard, Malabar pit viper, hump-nosed pit viper, white-bellied woodpecker, golden-back gliding snake, and Malabar tree toad. Ranging from 500 metres to 5 kilometres, the sanctuary has eight nature trails. Amazingly, the Gal and Talpona rivers of Canacona Taluka get originated from this sanctuary. The sanctuary also features a rubber plantation where you can see the processing of rubber demonstrated. Within the premises, there is a very unique kind of watchtower present in the sanctuary that is entirely balanced on trees and needs a steep climb to reach. The tree top overlooks an amazing site of a water hole where you can see animals coming to drink water.

  • The best time to visit the sanctuary is from the month of October to December for the finest experience of the wildlife. The sanctuary is open for visitors from 7 in the morning to 5: 30 in the evening.

  • There is also Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and Mollem National Park worth exploring which is a habitat for large number of wild animals, waterfalls, canyon and a 12th century heritage site, Mahadev's temple.

...and you thought Goa was only about beaches!
