Jaisalmer on your mind for the next vacation? Splendid choice! While the Golden City welcomes you to its folds with a warm embrace, commercialisation always has its own hassles. Read up the following tips, save yourself from trouble and holiday happy!

  • Stay

You might find yourself being chased by men on motorbikes to sell hotels rooms and stay options to you as soon as you enter Jaisalmer. It is advisable to steer clear of the deals these people promise and get your bookings confirmed before hand.
  • Luggage

Make it a point to always have your luggage in sight when using public transport and incase you need to leave it unattended, make it a point to padlock it to a bedpost or pipe.

Avoid carrying handbags, prefer backpacks instead. They are easier to carry and manage along with being impossible to snatch. Keep small amounts of money in various pockets, try not to carry it all in one place.
  • Weather

It is best to do your exploration in the mornings and evenings, as the sun is too harsh in the afternoons. Keep yourself well hydrated and do stop for the occasional glass of butter milk or lemonade (insist on mineral water).
  • Shopping

Yes, the markets and colourful displays of Jaisalmer are inviting. However, it is important to bear in mind that traders often quote exorbitant prices for tourists. Put on the poker face, do some haggling if need be and make sure you get value for money. Also, avoid shopping from places your cab or auto rickshaw drivers insist on, they are often motivated by profit shares and not quality wares.

The rule of bargaining also applies to cabs and auto rickshaws.
  • Sightseeing

Make sure you check up on the opening and closing timings of a monument before you head there, you don't want to land up there and find out that you cannot enter. Hire only government approved guides with identity cards as there are a number of goons waiting to prey on gullible tourists.
  • Cameras

Video and Still Cameras often have a separate charge in all the monuments you are set to visit. I strongly recommend getting a ticket for the same as not doing so may land you up in trouble later. Also, don't just hand anybody your camera for taking care or clicking pictures, as there have been incidents when cameras are lost or stolen this way.

With all the above in mind, you will surely have a memorable vacation in Jaisalmer. Make a note of the information so these tips so that you won’t miss out on anything that is needed to complete the picture of a perfect vacation. Pack your bag and zip to these glittering golden sands in the state of Rajasthan.
