Kumarakom is a hotspot tourist destination. Everything seems to be traveller centric from hotels to food and sightseeing. Just keep the following tips in mind so that nothing can come between you and a fantastic holiday.

  • Clothes

Kumarakom has a tropical sort of weather and so you carry casual cotton clothes. Kerala is a little conservative so you can skip those short shorts if you are travelling outside Kumarakom. Dab loads of sunscreen lotion, sunglasses are a must and wear flip flops or floaters. Go for floaters if you plan on visiting the beach.

While visiting the religious places be properly dressed. In churches you’ll need to remove your footwear and women are required to cover their head (especially if service is on). In temples, women can only enter in sarees or set sarees (traditional saree form) and men are supposed to wear munda (dhotis) and no shirts. There are also rules about the entry of non hindus, so take direction from your hotel and the locals.

  • Stay

The first thing to do when you plan a holiday in Kumarakom is to make your reservations right away! Tourists keep pouring in and if you are thinking of booking a hotel after reaching the place, you might not end up getting what you planned for. Also, hotels are cheaper on the outskirts. You can get a hotel in Kottayam if you are looking at saving a bit on stay. You could also glance through holiday packages that will include stay, sightseeing and cruise. It might turn out to be a more organised and cheaper affair.

  • Eat and drink

There isn’t a culture of street food but a line of restaurants in hotels that will dole out the best in Kerala cuisine. Seafood is fresh and reasonable. There are shops on the beach where they’ll cook seafood for you the way you like it. You can also ask your houseboat driver to take you to some local fish and toddy shops in the area. Toddy (local liquor made of fermented coconut water) is best consumed in the morning, say around 10 am and 11 am. As the day passes, toddy ferments and it becomes more concentrated and bitter.

  • Travel

Autos don’t have meters and bargaining isn’t that effective. Autos charge you a two-way fare. So if you are travelling from point A to B, they’ll charge you for going from A to B and back to A. Hire a cab instead. And ask you hotel to help you out with the cab service. You can do without an AC cab if you are traveling in the morning or evening. But it gets really hot during the day.

With a few tips in mind, you can’t go wrong with vacation plans in Kumarakom. Go ahead, eat, drink and holiday at Kumarakom!
