Visit this Paradise of the South with its vast coastlines, blue waters and swaying coconut trees. And how can we forget the incredibly therapeutic Ayurvedic massages which have become the part and parcel of any tourist activity in this region. A visit to Kerala is incomplete without coming to this beach. But, Kovalam doesn’t exactly remain pleasant throughout the year, so you should give a little thought to the timings of your visit. Following is a brief over overview of the different seasonal moods of this beach town.

  • Summers (March to May)
Avoid this season if you can, because it gets uncomfortably hot. And with an occasional splattering of rains, it gets humid as well. So, hot and humid - not exactly a great combination, when you wish to laze out on the beach or venture out for some sightseeing. However, if you do plan to come during this time, carry loads of light cottons and a big bottle of sunblock lotion. The temperatures usually range from 20°C to 37°C.
  • Monsoon (June to August)
If you love rain and thunderstorms, you will love Kovalam during monsoons. This season sees a very elemental symphony of heavy showers and thunderstorms. With drops pelting down on the coconut groves, forcing them to arch down in obeisance, and ocean surface in complete tumult. Add flashes of lightning and thunderstorms and you get a magnificent tableau of natural splendour. Truly a sight to behold - especially at night. Though you may not get much of sightseeing done, you can certainly indulge in some relaxing Ayurvedic massages. Moreover, you can avail the lower off-season prices offered by the beach resorts. The end of August sees a slight lessening of the showers and arrival of the Onam season.
  • Winters (September to February)
September marks the official beginning of the tourist season. This is the best time to come to this beach town, more so, during the months of November to January. Tourists can participate in several beach activities like sunbathing, surfing, diving, or indulge in several kinds of Ayurvedic massages offered by various spas and beach resorts. The days can be somewhat hot with temperatures reaching upto 33°C, but the nights are comparatively cooler. If you plan your vacation around January, you will be able to enjoy some of the major Kovalam festivals and fairs like The Great Elephant Festival, The Gramam Fair and the Food festival.

In summary, the best time to visit Kovalam would be in the months of December and January, but you can still come during the monsoons, i.e. June to August, if you are not particularly interested in sightseeing, and simply wish to relax in a beach resort and pamper yourself rotten. Take a look at the different Kovalam packages and the online train booking options on ixigo.
