Have you ever made the connection between Jodhpurs - the haute fashion item, and Jodhpur city? For those who do not follow fashion trends or have not been around horses much, Jodhpurs are basically a riding outfit worn by the horse riders to prevent chaffing of the inner thigh and calf while riding. It was first popularised by Sir Pratap Singh, the younger son of the then Maharaja of Jodhpur. Of late, these have made a huge impact in the fashion industry and are available in both formal or casual styles. So why are we discussing Jodhpurs in a sports question? Just to give you the idea that the sport we are talking about has to do with riding horses. Full marks to you if you guessed it already. Yes, it is Polo!

Though miniature paintings in the Mehrangarh Fort suggest that Polo was played by the Rajputs even in the medieval times, Jodhpur Polo became popular amongst the Rathores in 1889 when Sir Pratap, the younger brother of the Maharaja of Jodhpur invited Col. Stuart of the Bengal Lancers to help him with the Jodhpur Lancers. The blood rushing charges, the frantic pace of the game, the thrill of victory, Polo was a wonderful alternative to battles and wars, and the Rathores pursued it with great gusto. After winning their first trophy in 1893, they went on to win several matches, both in India and abroad. Gradually the number of polo players increased to rival the oldest Polo Club of Calcutta, so much so that one Nawab was heard complaining, “Polo players are springing up like bloody mushrooms in Jodhpur!”

Though the team suffered a setback during the second world war, the team was revived again 1993 by Maharaja Gaj Singh, who always had a keen interest in the game. In 2000, a new Polo ground was created which has since seen a lot of successful matches over the years. The royal heir, Yuvraj Shivraj Singh is skilled in the game and captains the Jodhpur team at present. The city has hosted several cups like the Rajputana & Central India cup, Jodhpur Polo cup, The Hermes cup and the Golden Jubilee cup, among others. In fact, Jodhpur hosted the first Asian Cycle Polo Championship held in 2011. Cycle Polo is like regular polo except cycles are used in place of horses. This game has been a hit since 2007, and new teams are sprouting out, all over the country. Jodhpur hopes to give birth to world famous players who will help in reviving the golden years of Jodhpur Polo. You can plan your Jodhpur trip today to see the game and its action in reality. Also, while planning your trip, it is ideal to take a look through the different Jodhpur packages; they are of certain help.
