We all have heard the famous saying, “There is always a first time for everything”. Well, world’s firsts did take the saying quite seriously! Read on to find out more.

The first motorised bicycle
Designed and built by Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler, two German inventors, “Riding Car” or Reitwagen was the first petroleum-powered vehicle in 1885.

The first camera
The first digital camera was invented by Steve Sasson, an American electrical engineer at Eastman Kodak in 1975. Unlike today’s advanced cameras, this camera captured photographs in black and white, and the processing time was 23 seconds. Who has so much of patience today?

The first modern restaurant
Monsieur Boulanger, who initially was a soup vendor, became the first restaurant proprietor in 1765. He opened the world’s first modern restaurant in Paris that only served healthy soups. A steaming hot bowl of sheep's feet stewed in white sauce being was the speciality during those days.

The first travel agency, Thomas Cook & Son was founded by Thomas Cook, a strict Baptist from Melbourne, Derbyshire. In 2007, the agency’s name was renamed to Thomas Cook Group, which still exists today!

The first motor hotel
The world’s first motel was built in 1925 by Arthur Heineman, an LA architect in San Luis Obispo, California. It was later that the name of the motel was changed to “motor hotel” from Milestone Mo-Tel. Back then, a guest could stay for a night at the motel for just $1.25. Surprisingly, the motel is still operational!

The first concept car, Buick Y-Job was designed in 1928 by Harley Earl, one of the famous designers of General Motors. Besides flush door handles, the car had hidden headlamps which were power-operated.

The first building to use structural steel
The first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, Illinois (42 m high) was built in 1885 and demolished in 1931. It was the first building to use structural steel in its construction and was supported by a fireproof metal frame, both inside and outside.

Penydarren was the first steam locomotive train to be built by Richard Trevithick in 1804. It was also the first train to carry 10 tons of iron from Merthyr Tydfil to Abercynon, Wales (covering 9 ½ miles).
