There are several tweets on the same subject asking the Indian Railways for clarification.

To clear the confusion, IRCTC tweeted that the lower berths or senior citizen quota berths are reserved only for male passengers aged 60 years and above or female passengers aged 45 years and above. The privilege can be entitled when traveling alone or if two passengers (under the mentioned criteria) are travelling on one ticket.

They further added that if there are more than two senior citizens or one senior citizen with a passenger (who is not a senior citizen), then the Railway system will not consider it.

The Indian Railways had suspended concessional tickets last year for various categories including that of senior citizens quota to discourage unnecessary travel amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
