Indian Railways, helping 23 million Indians commute with more than 12000 trains daily, serves as the lifeline of the country. To maintain discipline and ensure convenient travel for all the passengers, the transporter has set a number of rules. Two of the most common rules are – ticketless travel and chain-pulling without a valid reason.

Here are some other important rules you must know —

1) Travelling without proper ticket (Sec. 138 Railway Act) Punishment: The passenger will be charged the fare for the distance he/she has travelled or from the station from which the train departed plus the excess charge of ₹250

2) Travelling Fraudulently (Sec. 137 Railway Act) Punishment: 6 months jail or a fine of ₹1,000 or both.

3) Alarm Chain Pulling (Sec. 141 Railway Act) Punishment: 12 months jail or a fine of ₹1,000 or both

4) Travelling in Coach Reserved for Handicapped Passengers (Sec. 155 (a) Railway Act) Punishment: 3 months jail or a fine of ₹500 or both.

5) Travelling o­n Rooftop (Sec. 156 Railway Act) Punishment: 3 months jail or a fine of ₹500 or both.

6) Trespassing (Sec. 147 Railway Act) Punishment: 6 months jail or a fine of ₹1,000 or both.
