The only highlight of my stay at Ri Kynjai was the beautiful lake view from the cottage. Unfortunately, the overall experience fell well below expectations for a property that positions itself as a premium resort.Basic amenities such as reliable internet connectivity were lacking. There were very few recreational activities for children and families, and the dedicated play areas appeared neglected and poorly maintained. The biggest disappointment was the fixed timing for hot water. Guests paying resort rates should not have to plan their showers around a schedule. It felt more like a hostel arrangement than a luxury hospitality experience. What was most concerning, however, was the cleanliness of the cottage. We found mouse droppings on the room floor as well as in the bathroom, which is unacceptable from a hygiene and guest-comfort perspective. While the location and views are excellent, the resort needs significant improvement in maintenance, cleanliness, guest amenities, and overall service standards to justify its pricing.

The highlight of this property are the scenic views it offers. Beautiful locally sourced materials used for decorating add to local vibe. Services are average - though Mr. Mishra in dinning stood out for his hospitality. The short walk to the lake is risky due to no maintenance. The cottages have stairs - so not recommended for people with mobility issues. Rooms are spacious. Breakfast buffet is average. Due to the remote location eating out is not an easy option. The name is apt - serenity prevails.

My stay at this property was extremely disappointing and, without a doubt, one of the worst experiences I have encountered at a luxury hotel in this price range. The most significant issue was the persistent cigarette smoke smell in Room R2 throughout our stay. Due to what appeared to be a poorly designed or ineffective ventilation system, smoke from other rooms continuously entered ours, exposing us to passive smoking for the entirety of our visit. Despite repeatedly raising this concern with the management, no meaningful solution was provided. The only response was the occasional use of room fresheners, which masked the smell temporarily for no more than 20’30 minutes before it returned. When we requested a room change, our request was refused, leaving us with no option but to endure the situation. The consequences of this were not merely an inconvenience. My cousin, who was sharing the room with me, developed a persistent dry cough by the final day of our stay, significantly affecting our ability to enjoy the trip and causing considerable discomfort.Equally disappointing was the restaurant service. The service was consistently slow, with excessively long waiting times for food. On several occasions, specific instructions regarding our meals were either ignored or not followed correctly. What was even more concerning was the attitude of certain staff members, who chose to argue rather than acknowledge or rectify mistakes, despite guests paying premium prices for both accommodation and dining services.Overall, the experience fell far below the standards one would reasonably expect from a high-end property. The combination of poor room conditions, lack of responsiveness from management, and unsatisfactory restaurant service resulted in a deeply frustrating stay. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise prospective guests to consider alternative properties in the area, many of which offer comparable luxury accommodations and are likely to provide a far superior level of service and guest care.

Serene Scenic Retreat

10.0

Loved everything about this place! The rustic interiors, the privacy, the exclusive experience, the scenic views of the lake, the forest and the hills. We got the lake view cottage and the view was excellent. The rooms are very clean and well maintained. In food- would recommend trying out the local cuisine from the menu.Ri Kynjai is not a stay, it’s an experience where time slows down and you unwind. It’s a boutique stay.Writing this for those who thoroughly read reviews like me before booking.

Tranquil Lakeside Retreat

8.0

We recently stayed at Ri Kynjai in Shillong, and the property truly stands out for its breathtaking location. Perched by the lake, it offers stunning panoramic views, especially from the private balconies ’ waking up to the serene waters and misty hills was easily the highlight of the stay. The spa facilities are excellent and provide a relaxing break after a day of exploring Meghalaya. The food was also very good. However, considering the price point, the in-room facilities felt somewhat limited and could certainly be enhanced to match the premium positioning of the resort. Another area for improvement is the lack of curated activities within the resort ’ it would be wonderful if more experiences or engagement opportunities were planned for guests staying on the property.Overall, Ri Kynjai is a beautiful place for those seeking tranquility, great views, and a peaceful lakeside stay, but a few upgrades in room amenities and guest activities would make the experience truly exceptional.
