Indian Railways hikes ticket prices; here’s why

Indian Railways announced a hike in ticket prices across its network, excluding suburban trains, effective from 1st January 2020.

A statement issued by the railways said, “In order to expand passenger amenities and facilities at Railway stations and in trains, it has become imperative to increase the train fare marginally without overburdening any class of passengers. Fast modernisation of Indian Railway will be achieved through this fare revision.”


Details about the train fare hike:
 

1) For all AC classes, the fare is increased by 4 paise/km 

2) For ordinary Non-AC classes, the fare is increased by 1 paise/km

3) For mail/express Non-AC classes, the hike is increased by 2 paise/km

Note: This fare hike is also applicable to premium trains such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi and Duronto.

The hike in fares is not applicable to tickets already booked.
