Railways Conducted Special Drive to Curb Various Malpractices

The Indian Railways conducted a special drive for checking the malpractices of ticketless travelling, touting and misuse of facilities.

The drive led to prosecution of 59,115 unauthorised vendors and 307 touts under sections 143 and 144 of the Railways Act, 1989 as per a report submitted by the Railways to Lok Sabha. The main aim of this drive was to curb malpractices like ticketless passengers, misuse of several facilities and most importantly, touting activities.

The drive was introduced by all zonal railways for the period of April 1st to  June 30th to conduct checks in mass contact regions. The Rail Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu said that Railways is already working on a system which will make the general public aware of streamlining of reservation process and make it more transparent.

During the drive, 307 touts, 59,115 unauthorised vendors and seven illegal ticketing agencies have been prosecuted. An amount of Rs 1.18 crore was recovered during the special drive,” Suresh Prabhu said during Question Hour.

He further added “Simultaneous checks were conducted at reservation offices and on the trains to detect the cases of transferred reserved tickets i.e., persons found travelling fraudulently against accommodation actually reserved in the name of another passenger,”.
