As per the official sources, it has been issued as a precautionary measure against the growing number of COVID-19 cases in the country:

The ASI protects more than 3600 monuments in the country, including Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Humayun’s Tomb, which account for some of the highest tourist footfalls in the country.

In a statement, Nitin Tripathi, the media advisor for the Ministry also clarified that in live monuments such as the Puri Jagannath Temple and Somnath Temple, daily ‘puja’ will be conducted but no public gathering will be allowed.

After closing all monuments in a similar fashion in March 2020, the ASI had reopened them in July 2020 amid strict regulations such as mandatory wearing of masks, adhering to social distancing and capping on the number of visitors.

With the sudden surge in cases, the monuments have once again been shut to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

We advise our readers to make a note of these new changes and follow all COVID safety precautions. Stay safe!
