Ashwini Vaishnaw: 10 facts about India’s new Railway Minister

PM Modi’s Cabinet reshuffle is the talk of the town. Forty-three ministers took oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan this week, and that included our new Minister of Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Not many knew of this Rajya Sabha MP’s background before he replaced Piyush Goyal. But after a bit of digging, the Indian internet is in awe of Vaishnaw’s glowing resume.

  • A 1994-batch IAS officer, Vaishnaw cracked the civil services exam with an all-India rank of 27.

  • He is a gold medallist in electronics and communications engineering from Jai Narayan Vyas University.

  • Vaishnaw holds an M.Tech from IIT Kanpur in Industrial Management and Engineering.

  • He completed his MBA from the famous Wharton School of Business in Pennsylvania, USA.

  • Vaishnaw has served as the District Collector of Balasore and Cuttack in Odisha.

  • He was the Deputy Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office under Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

  • He was the Deputy Chairman of Goa’s Mormugao Port Trust.

  • Vaishnaw also held top corporate positions in multinational companies like General Electric and Siemens.

  • He was awarded the President’s Silver Medal, Commendation by the National Human Rights Commission.

  • He has been a Rajya Sabha MP from Odisha since 2019.

Vaishnaw has been given charge of two other ministries apart from the Railways—the Ministry of Communications, and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. 

There are lots of synergies in the three and I will be working to ensure that his (PM Modi’s) vision is implemented,” said the fifty-year-old.
