Indian Railways Planning to Replace Guards with EoTT System

The Indian Railways will soon get off the ground with global tenders worth over INR 100 cr for procuring advanced equipment for running 1000 trains with no guards. The End of Train Telemetry (EoTT) equipment will be used to set communication between the locomotive driver and the last wagon of the train. This will ensure that the train is operating with all its coaches or wagons as a whole unit.

The equipment will do the job of a train guard and will provide indication to the loco driver if the coaches or wagons are parting from the back of the train. Each set of EoTT device as an estimate will cost around INR 10 lakh.

EoTT system has two units; Cab Display Unit (CDU) incorporated on the locomotive and Sense and Brake Unit (SBU) fitted to the last coach of the train. These two units have a radio transmitter that will communicate with each other. So, in case the train is parting, this system will indicate the driver about the same and automatically apply brakes to the rear unit, turning away the collision of the rear portion with the front portion of the train.

“We will invite financial bids for acquiring 1000 EoTT equipment in the first phase,” said a senior Railway Ministry official involved with the project.

Earlier, Railways had undertaken the trial run of the EoTT system and it was successful. For 1000 trains, the EoTT system is expected to be functional in the current fiscal.
