The Indian Railways is planning to implement a new policy under which the physically disabled people will get lower berths in 3 tier AC coaches. At present, there is a provision for lower berth quotas for sleeper class only. Now, this facility will be extended for mails and express trains as well.
The Indian Railways has fixed a quota for ‘Divyangs’-differently-abled passengers to make their journey a hassle-free experience. All the necessary measures are being taken by the Railways for smooth functioning of the new policy which is expected to be announced this week. Under this policy, all the railway stations are being made accessible for a smooth entry of differently-abled travellers.
This recent move by the Railways is due to an incident wherein wheelchair bound athlete, Subarna Raj, was unable to get a lower berth and she had to sleep on the floor of Nagpur- Nizamuddin Garib Rath express.
The Railway Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu, had already ordered an inquiry into the incident and instructed corrective measures to avoid any such incidents in the future.
