According to the latest reports, the 8.8 km long Rohtang tunnel that is being constructed on the Leh-Manali highway may soon become operational.
Built at an elevation of 10171ft under the Rohtang Pass, the strategically important tunnel is being built to provide all-weather connectivity to Lahaul-Spiti district.

Once operational, the tunnel will reduce the distance between Manali and Keylong, the administrative centre of Lahaul-Spiti, by 45 km.
The tunnel, which plans to be operational by May 2020, will allow the Leh-Manali highway to remain open to traffic even during winters. As of now, Rohtang Pass remains open to the public for just five months a year due to heavy snowfall during the winter months.
