Under the new ‘Amrit Bharat Station Scheme’, the Indian Railways will modernise 1000 small yet important railway stations.

These small stations would be identified based on the cities they cater to and not just on their footfalls.

“The idea is to start modernising stations in a cost-effective manner. According to need, the Divisional Railway Managers (DRMs) will take a call on modernisation works in a phased manner,” a Railway official said.

Some modern facilities planned under the scheme are as follows:

> Provision for roof plazas, which will be created in the future.

> Free Wi-Fi along with designated spaces for installing 5G mobile towers.

> Smoother access to station entry by widening roads, removing unwanted structures, properly designed signages, well-planned parking areas, dedicated pedestrian pathways, improved lighting, etc.

> More comfortable and durable furniture on platforms and in waiting halls, retiring rooms and railway offices.

> Escalators.

> High-level platforms (760–840 mm) at all stations with a length of 600 metres.

At least two station name boards should be LED-based for better visibility.

> Special amenities for the differently abled passengers.

> The location of toilets should be accessible, easily visible and in accordance with station usage.
