Attukal Pongala – A Festival Only For Women

Attukal Pongala is a 10 day festival celebrated at Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. During this time, the most important ritual is held on the 9th day where millions of female devotees gather together. It is said to be the largest annual gathering of women in the world.

Wao fact: This festival earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records on 10th March 2009, when 2.5 million women attended it.

Here, at this festival women prepare sweet Pongal which is like a pudding made of rice, jaggery, coconut, and plantains and offer it to the Goddess or ‘Bhagavathy.’
