Unearth Hostel (Pondicherry)

The staff are really friendly and helpful to help you understand auroville in the different ways to understand the lifestyle. The location is good. It has good access to Auroville road which is where there’s lots of restaurants and the social hub. It’s also really easy to get to activities in auroville itself from Unearth. It’s right in the middle of all of it. The environment is so chilled and relaxed I absolutely loved it. The common areas are HUGE and more than enough room to be social or relax by yourself depending on your mood. I would be more than happy to recommend this place.

After posting positive reviews, I arrived here only to find it was a total disaster. The dormitory they assigned me to was extremely smelly, with wet clothes causing a really bad odor, making it feel very unhygienic. I had flown all the way from Kashmir and was very tired. I checked in around 9:30, but was so disappointed that I had to book another taxi late at night and leave. The person managing the place was kind and easy to talk to, but the accommodation was a complete mess, stinky, and felt very unclean. So, I moved to Zostel that night and had a much better experience.

I spent three days at Unearth Hostel in Auroville and generally had a nice time enjoying the beautiful and tranquil environment. What stood out positively: the location is secluded and peaceful, ideal for relaxation; the rooms were tidy, cozy, and well-kept; the friendly resident cats added a warm atmosphere; late-night Uno and Tarot card games created memorable moments; the Yamaha guitar, despite one broken string, still produced a rich sound; and I met some great travelers, even if only briefly. Areas that could be better: the amenities were quite basic, and the reception staff could have been more helpful and proactive in offering local advice and recommendations to enhance the stay. P.S. If this reaches Vashisht Ji from Himachal, a fellow mountain person remembers you!
