India to get the World’s Highest Rail Bridge by May 2019

Indian Railways is on track to achieve another milestone with Chenab Bridge in Jammu & Kashmir, set to be the highest railway arch bridge in the world.

The iconic bridge will provide direct connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. The bridge is supposed to be 30 m taller than the world-famous Eiffel Tower and will rise 359 m above the Chenab bed.


According to M K Gupta, Member Engineering, Railway Board, “We have begun the work on installations of main arch between two sides of the bridge. We have launched the main-arch.”


Rail Minister Piyush Goyal also tweeted that the bridge will soon be a reality as the construction work is in full swing.


Features of Chenab Bridge are:

> For better security, blast proof steel is being used for the construction
> It can stand wind speed up to 260km/hr

The 1.3-km-long bridge is being constructed at a cost of Rs 1,250 crore and will be completed by May 2019.
