According to a Rail Ministry source, the demand was that the existing designation train guard has become outdated. It was also said that in today’s society, the common man thinks that he/she may be a guard in some private firm.

As a Train Guard is virtually in charge of the train, therefore their new designation as the ‘Train Manager’ is quite appropriate. This “would be a dignified designation for them without any financial implication, so that they can also lead a respectful life in the society,” as per the statement by the Rail Ministry.

Even though this change in designation will not entail any change in the pay levels, method of recruitment, existing duties and responsibilities, seniority and avenues of promotion, the decision adds respect to their posts.

As per the order, Assistant Guard will now be ‘Assistant Passenger Train Manager’ and Goods Guard will be ‘Goods Train Manager.’ A Senior Passenger Guard will be the ‘Senior Passenger Train Manager,’ while a Mail/Express Train Guard will be referred to as the ‘Mail/Express Train Manager.’

The move is expected to improve the motivation level of the Guards, who are now known as Train Managers.
