Plug Type and Travel Adapter Guide for China

Plug types used in China

China uses 3 plug types: Type A, C and I. Of these, Type A and I are not used in India, so you'll need a travel adapter for those sockets.

Type A plug and socket

Type A

Type A: Features two parallel, flat pins.

Type C plug and socket

Type C

Type C: Uses two parallel, round pins.

Type I plug and socket

Type I

Type I: Three flat pins in a V formation.

Do I Need a Voltage Converter in China?

China runs on a main voltage of 220 volts at a frequency of 50 Hz. This is effectively the same as India's 230V/50Hz. You can plug any Indian device into a China socket without a voltage converter, as long as the plug shape fits.

Will my Indian charger work in China?

Yes, but it depends on which socket your hotel has. China uses Type A, C and I sockets at 220V/50Hz. Your Indian phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage (the label reads 100–240V), so they handle China voltage without any issue. The only question is plug shape — your Indian plug fits Type C sockets directly, but will not fit Type A and I sockets without an adapter. You do not need a voltage converter — China's 220V is the same as India's 230V.
