Spiti Ecosphere

Spiti Ecosphere is an organisation that aims to create a sustainable livelihood for the people of Spiti, by conserving nature. The organisation was established more than five years ago. Their work includes:

  • Promoting greenhouses for cultivation.
  • Promoting local handicrafts.
  • Promoting Solar housing and other solar efficient structures for daily activities.

They invite volunteers from all around the world to come and be a part of Spiti Ecosphere.

Rural Organisation for Social Elevation (ROSE)

A small group of local and tourist volunteers in the Kumaoni region of Uttarakhand works with an aim of improving the livelihood, health, and quality of life of the people of the region. The goal of the organisation is achieved by bringing together volunteers to live with the Verma family, experiencing their local culture, and assisting them, both, financially and physically for the development. Some of the activities of the organisation are–

  • Construction of toilets.
  • Construction of earthquake proof homes.
  • Spreading knowledge on sanitation and employment.
  • Promotion of organic farming.

Haji Public School

With an aim of providing education to the children at the inaccessible village of Breswana in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir, Haji Public School was formed in 2009. The school was started with two classes, two teachers, and 35 students, but with the continuous effort of the locals as well as the Indian and the International volunteers, the numbers have increased to 350 students, 20 teachers, and classes up to Grade 8.

Sadhana Forest, Auroville

Afforestation and water conservation remain the main purpose of Sadhana Forest. The 70 acres of eroded land on the outskirts of Auroville is being conserved by planting trees and working on water conservation. The main aim of the mission is to bring back the Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest to flourish,   preventing it from extinction.

Ladli

At Ladli, the poor street kids are taught how to make jewellery and handicrafts so that they do not have to beg or land into other wrong activities for their livelihood. Apart from that, they are also taught Hindi, English, Art, and Dance, and are provided nutrition, medical check-ups, and counselling. This small NGO helps and supports 3,000 children daily; in case you have a soft heart for children, don’t stop yourself from lending your support to the kids at Ladli.

LHA Charitable Trust

LHA, a non-profitable charitable trust, is the biggest Tibetan social work institutes based in Dharamshala, which work to support the Tibetan community and other people from Himalayan regions. LHA offers classes in English, French, Spanish, and Chinese apart from other health and environment awareness sessions, vocational training, and distribution of clothes and medicine to refugees. The volunteers share their experiences with each other over lunch, twice a month.
