Maharishi Valmiki International Airport Ayodhya Dham was officially renamed in December 2023, shortly before its inauguration. Originally proposed as Maryada Purshottam Shri Ram International Airport, the current designation honors the sage credited with composing the Ramayana. The facility was inaugurated on December 30, 2023, and began commercial operations in January 2024, significantly upgrading the site of the former Faizabad Airport airstrip. As a newly commissioned facility, it does not yet feature in the top tier of India’s busiest airports by long-term volume, though it demonstrated rapid growth by handling over 1.1 million passengers during the 2024-25 financial year. Notable milestones include the terminal’s Phase 1 completion in a record 20 months and its achievement of a GRIHA 4-star sustainability rating for its use of solar energy and water recycling systems. The airport’s runway was extended to 2,200 meters to support narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A321. Ayodhya serves as a preeminent global religious and heritage destination, and the airport is central to its role as a spiritual hub. By providing direct connectivity for millions of pilgrims visiting the Ram Janmabhoomi complex, the airport facilitates the region’s transition into a high-capacity international tourism center, with scheduled services supported by carriers such as IndiGo and Air India Express.
