Kochi International Airport, officially known as Cochin International Airport, is located in Nedumbassery and is named after the historic port city it serves. It is notable for being the first airport in India developed under a public-private partnership model. The facility commenced operations on June 10, 1999, replacing the commercial flight operations previously handled by the naval air station, INS Garuda, on Willingdon Island. As of the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it stands as the fourth busiest airport in India in terms of international passenger traffic and the eighth busiest overall, handling over 10 million passengers annually. A pioneer in sustainable aviation, it became the world’s first fully solar-powered airport in 2015, an achievement recognized by the United Nations with the Champions of the Earth award in 2018. Globally, it was named the best airport in the 5 to 15 million passenger category for the Asia-Pacific region by the Airports Council International in 2023. The airport significantly expanded its infrastructure with the inauguration of Terminal 3 in 2017, increasing its total capacity to approximately 15 million passengers per year. Kochi serves as Kerala's primary industrial and commercial hub, a major maritime port, and a gateway for the state’s tourism industry. The airport supports these roles by providing vital connectivity for the region’s global diaspora and facilitating the export of local goods through its advanced cargo facilities.
