Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMI), officially designated as the Loknete DB Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport, was renamed in 2022 to honor the late parliamentarian and local leader Dinkar Balu Patil, who championed the rights of project-affected families. The greenfield facility was inaugurated in October 2025 and commenced commercial operations on December 25, 2025, with an inaugural flight from Bengaluru operated by IndiGo, serving as a critical secondary gateway to complement, rather than replace, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. By April 2026, the airport has already ascended to become India’s ninth busiest domestic hub, reflecting the immense travel demand within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Key milestones include the completion of its 3,700-meter southern runway and the opening of Terminal 1, a lotus-inspired structure designed by Zaha Hadid Architects with an initial annual capacity of 20 million passengers. Notably, the airport is the first in India equipped with sustainable aviation fuel fueling capabilities and has achieved Level 4+ carbon-neutral status. As a primary infrastructure pillar, the airport supports Navi Mumbai’s role as a burgeoning IT and business district and a global maritime hub via the nearby Jawaharlal Nehru Port. By integrating with the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and the metro network, the airport facilitates seamless logistics and international transit, bolstering the city’s status as a self-sustaining economic engine and a vital industrial corridor for Western India.
