Veer Savarkar International Airport, officially designated by the IATA code IXZ, was renamed in 2002 to honor the Indian independence activist Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, who was famously incarcerated at the city’s Cellular Jail. Previously known as Port Blair Airport, the site originated as a strategic military airfield during World War II before transitioning into the primary civil aviation facility for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled over 1.25 million passengers, ranking it as the 34th busiest airport in the country. A major milestone in its development was the inauguration of the New Integrated Terminal Building on July 18, 2023. This shell-shaped facility, constructed at a cost of approximately 710 crore rupees, increased the airport's annual handling capacity to 5 million passengers. The terminal emphasizes sustainability through the integration of a 500-kilowatt solar power plant and a design that maximizes natural skylighting to minimize electricity usage. As the capital of a remote archipelago, Port Blair functions as a critical maritime hub and the primary gateway for the region’s tourism sector.
