The airport has been developed on 212 acres of land and is capable of handling operations for ATR-72-type aircraft. The Airports Authority of India did the upgradation of the airport.

The airport started operating in 2018 as part of the regional connectivity scheme UDAN. Currently, it has regular scheduled flights connecting it to Dibrugarh, Imphal, and Guwahati, operated by Alliance Air and Flybig Airlines.

The improvements will make the airport able to handle more flights, connect the Northeastern region better with the rest of the country, increase tourism and trade, and create jobs.
