Esparan Heritage

A lovely hotel situated in the Tamil area of Pondicherry. This heritage property offers large, roomy accommodations. The staff are attentive and caring. Breakfast is excellent, featuring homemade dishes that provide an authentic taste of Tamil cuisine. They also organized a Kerala food buffet for lunch and dinner upon our request, serving fresh meals. The team is fantastic and very helpful.

The property has a heritage-looking appearance, but unfortunately that was the only positive aspect of our experience. The pricing is not particularly budget-friendly either; it is comparable to several other accommodations in Pondicherry that offer significantly better standards. Our experience with the management was particularly concerning. The person in charge contacted me and asked me to cancel the Booking.com reservation and book directly with him instead, offering a substantial discount if I did so. This immediately made me uncomfortable, especially since Booking.com had given us the option to pay at the property/check-in.We eventually made an advance payment after being persuaded by the management, but the reality we encountered on arrival was very different from what we had expected. It took us barely 10 minutes at the property to realise that we could not stay there for two days. The location felt unsafe, the water appeared unhygienic, the toilets were dirty, and the air-conditioning was not functioning properly. These were not minor inconveniences’we simply did not feel comfortable staying there with our family. We left almost immediately and requested that our advance payment be refunded. Unfortunately, it was not. What was even more disappointing was the conduct of the management when we subsequently raised the refund issue. Instead of handling a legitimate customer concern professionally, the WhatsApp communication became disrespectful and unnecessarily confrontational in tone. That interaction genuinely made me wonder: if this is how guests are spoken to when they raise a reasonable concern before even staying, how comfortable and safe would we have felt if we had actually stayed there with our family for two days?I completely understand that a heritage property may have limitations and that budget accommodation does not need to be luxurious. But basic hygiene, functional facilities, a reasonably safe environment, transparent booking practices and respectful treatment of guests are fundamental expectations. My advice to potential guests is simple: please do not be influenced by the heritage appearance or photographs alone. Check the surroundings and facilities carefully, and think twice before making any direct advance payment based on assurances from the management. If you are travelling with family, I would be particularly cautious.I also believe Booking.com and other accommodation platforms should take a close look at properties where guests are encouraged to cancel platform reservations and book directly, particularly when the subsequent experience involves disputes over advance payments. Such practices undermine the protection and transparency that guests expect from booking platforms. For us, this was a very disappointing experience, and we would not recommend this property to other travellers. There are plenty of alternatives in Pondicherry at comparable prices that appear to offer a much better overall experience.

The hotel interiors give off a charming heritage vibe. The staff were very supportive and helpful. I was also able to rent a scooter from the hotel. The only downside is the parking, which is limited but typical for similar accommodations in the area.

The property has a heritage-style look, but sadly that was the only good thing about our stay. The prices are not very affordable either; they are similar to other places in Pondicherry that provide much better quality. Our interaction with the management was especially troubling. The manager contacted me and asked me to cancel my Booking.com reservation and book directly with him instead, promising a big discount if I did. This made me uneasy right away, especially since Booking.com allowed us to pay at the hotel upon arrival. We eventually paid in advance after the management convinced us, but what we found when we arrived was very different from what we expected. Within 10 minutes at the property, we realized we could not stay for two days. The area felt unsafe, the water seemed unclean, the toilets were dirty, and the air conditioning did not work well. These were not small issues—we just did not feel comfortable staying there with our family. We left almost immediately and asked for our advance payment back, but it was not refunded. What was even more upsetting was how the management behaved when we raised the refund issue. Instead of dealing with a valid customer concern professionally, their WhatsApp messages were rude and unnecessarily aggressive. That made me wonder: if guests are treated like this before even staying, how safe and comfortable would we have felt if we had stayed for two days with our family? I understand that a heritage property might have some limitations and budget accommodations don't have to be fancy. But basic cleanliness, working facilities, a safe environment, clear booking procedures, and respectful guest treatment are essential. My advice to future guests is: don't be fooled by the heritage look or photos alone. Check the location and facilities carefully, and think twice before making any advance payment directly based on management promises. If you are traveling with family, be especially cautious. I also think Booking.com and other booking sites should closely review properties that ask guests to cancel platform bookings and book directly, especially when disputes over advance payments follow. Such practices harm the trust and transparency guests expect from booking platforms. For us, this was a very disappointing stay, and we would not suggest this property to other travelers. There are many other options in Pondicherry at similar prices that seem to offer a much better experience.
