Don’t believe it.

Several media outlets recently published news that suggested the Railways would entirely do away with the waitlist option during your train ticket booking, as part of the draft National Rail Plan, by 2024.

The Railway Ministry has now issued a statement to clarify that this is not true. Instead, “efforts are being made” to increase passenger train capacity and make trains available on demand. This would reduce the possibility of getting waitlisted (yay!), but not remove it.

The waitlist provision, which comes into place when ticket demand for a train exceeds its berth/seat capacity, will be staying intact. It acts as a security blanket to give travellers a second shot at confirmed bookings.

We advise our passengers not to panic or make any rushed decisions based on sudden news alerts of this nature. Always check credible sources, such as the Ministry of Railways’ website or social media (and ixigo!) before making a call. Our team will always share the latest, most important train news that could impact your bookings.
