Know all about India’s longest electrified rail tunnel

India’s longest electrified rail tunnel is finally open! This tunnel, built between Cherlopalli and Rapuru railway stations, was inaugurated by M Venkaiah Naidu – Vice President of India. One of the distinguishing features of this 6.7 km long tunnel is that it is finished in a record time of 43 months.

The tunnel is a game-changer for cargo operations on the South Central Railway zone as cargo services have been made possible between Obulavaripalli-Venkatachalam-Krishnapatnam Port line for a distance of almost 113 km.

Some of the salient features of the country’s longest electrified tunnel are as follows:

1– The tunnel was built at a cost of Rs.437 crore, has a total of 44 trolley refuges and 14 cross-passages in a horseshoe design.

2– The tunnel is built in straight alignment and is 6,660 metres long, while the height of the tunnel is 6.5 metres.

3– The full-length lining of the tunnel has been provided with 300 mm thickness.

4– LED lighting has also been provided inside the tunnel at 10-metre intervals.
