Air India, the national flag carrier of India started operations in 1932 and remains one of the longest serving and the largest air carriers in the country. The airline's domestic hubs are located at Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi and Chatrapathi Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. The carrier is part of the Air India Limited. Air India also operates flights to USA, Canada, and a number of other overseas destinations from prominent Indian cities. Lounge Information

The official mascot of Air India is a mustachioed rotund man known as the Maharajah and the airline is referred to as a palace in the sky. First class and Executive class travellers get to revel in the luxury of lounge facilities provided by the airline across a number of Indian as well as international airports. In many of the airports, where the airline does not has its own lounge, passengers get to use the facilities offered by other fine lounges.


Baggage Policy

Baggage policy depends upon the class of travel and the country where the passenger is travelling to. The piece and weight systems are used for determining the baggage policy for different flights. First class and Economy class passengers are entitled to two pieces of free check in baggage. None of these pieces should weigh more than 32 kg, nor exceed 62 inches in terms of linear dimensions (length+height+width). Economy Plus and Economy Class travellers can also carry two pieces of free check in baggage. Passengers need to ensure that no single baggage weighs over more than 23 kg. Similarly, the linear dimensions of every individual piece of baggage should not extend 32 inches. Passengers across all classes are permitted to carry one piece of free hand baggage. This baggage should not weigh more than 8 kg or exceed 45 inches in linear dimensions.



As of 27th February, 2011 the fleet strength of Air India fleet stood at 103 besides an outstanding order for 30 more aircrafts. This included 75 Boeing and 28 Airbus aircrafts.


Air India Express

Merger Information

Pursuant to a government announcement Air India was merged with Indian Airlines in 2007. The merger resulted in the formation of the company, National Aviation Company of India Limited (NACIL).
