Aurangabad Airport, officially known as Aurangabad Airport (IXU) and also referred to as Chikkalthana Airport, is currently undergoing a formal transition to be renamed Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Airport following a 2020 Maharashtra state cabinet resolution honoring the second Maratha ruler. Originally developed in 1945, the facility serves as a critical aviation link for the Marathwada region. In the 2023–24 fiscal year, the airport handled 623,915 passengers, positioning it among the top 55 busiest airports in India by passenger traffic, though it does not currently hold a global ranking. A major milestone in its development was the 2008 inauguration of a modern integrated terminal building, spanning 190,000 square feet and featuring two aerobridges, which significantly upgraded the airport's capacity from its earlier modest infrastructure. More recently, in late 2023, the state government approved a 578-crore-rupee expansion project to extend the runway from 2,835 meters to 3,660 meters and construct a parallel taxiway. These upgrades support the city’s dual role as a premier tourism gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Ajanta and Ellora Caves and as a burgeoning industrial hub within the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor. By providing essential connectivity for seasonal international charter flights and regular domestic services, the airport facilitates the economic and cultural integration of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with major Indian metropolises.
