Shirdi Airport, officially named after the town of Shirdi which is synonymous with the 19th-century saint Sai Baba, was inaugurated on October 1, 2017. As a greenfield project, it did not replace an existing facility but was constructed to provide direct air connectivity to one of India’s most visited pilgrimage sites. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled 465,828 passengers, placing it among the top sixty busiest airports in the country; it does not currently hold a global traffic ranking. Key milestones in its development include the 2023 certification for night landing operations by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the extension of its runway to 3,200 meters to accommodate larger narrow-body aircraft. Furthermore, the Maharashtra government recently sanctioned a 527-crore rupee expansion project for a new passenger terminal designed to increase annual capacity to two million travelers. Shirdi functions primarily as a global spiritual and religious hub, centered around the Sai Baba temple complex. The airport supports this role by significantly reducing travel times for domestic and international devotees, transitioning the region from a traditional rail-dependent destination into a modern, accessible gateway for religious tourism and local economic growth in the Ahmednagar district.
