Belagavi Airport, historically referred to as Belgaum Airport, is located in Sambra, Karnataka. Named after the host city, the facility retains its IATA code, IXG, derived from the city's former name, Belgaum, which was officially changed to Belagavi in 2014. Established in 1942 by the Royal Air Force as a strategic military airfield during World War II, it later transitioned into a civilian airport under the Airports Authority of India without replacing any previous facility. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 321,114 passengers, establishing it as one of the busiest domestic terminals in Karnataka, though it does not currently hold a global ranking. A significant milestone was reached in September 2017 with the inauguration of a new integrated terminal building and an extended 2,300-meter runway capable of supporting narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320. Further expansion is underway, with the foundation stone for a much larger 20,000-square-meter terminal laid in March 2024 to meet rising demand. Belagavi serves as a vital industrial and educational center, home to a major foundry cluster and the Visvesvaraya Technological University. Facilitating scheduled flights by carriers such as IndiGo and Star Air, the airport supports the city’s role as the state's second administrative capital and a primary gateway to the Western Ghats and heritage tourism sites across northern Karnataka.
