Hubli Airport (HBX), officially designated as Hubballi Airport, is named after the city it serves in northern Karnataka. While it has operated under this name since its inception, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed a resolution in December 2023 recommending it be renamed after the 19th-century revolutionary Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna. The airport opened in 1974 and serves as a primary aviation site for the region rather than a replacement for an older facility. In the 2023–24 fiscal year, the airport handled 358,835 passengers, ranking as the third-busiest airport in Karnataka and approximately 67th in India by passenger volume. Significant milestones include the 2017 inauguration of a 3,600-square-meter terminal and the 2021 commissioning of an 8-megawatt solar power plant, which made the facility self-sufficient and the first Airports Authority of India site to export power to the state grid. Furthermore, the original terminal was converted into the region's first domestic air cargo complex in March 2021. As the Gateway to North Karnataka, the airport is central to the twin cities' role as an industrial, educational, and commercial hub. It facilitates the region's expanding IT sector and serves as the principal transit point for travelers exploring UNESCO World Heritage sites like Hampi and the heritage architecture of Badami and Pattadakal.
