Originally established as an airstrip for the Maharao of the princely state of Kutch, it retains its geographical name rather than being named after a specific individual. The modern facility was developed to replace the infrastructure destroyed during the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, with the current terminal building officially opening in 2003.
