Jamnagar Airport, officially known as the Civil Enclave Jamnagar, is a dual-use facility serving both military and commercial aviation. It is frequently referred to as Govardhanpur Airport due to its specific location within the city. Unlike many Indian airports named after political figures, it retains the name of the historic princely state and the industrial city it serves. While the airfield has functioned as a critical Indian Air Force base since the 1940s, dedicated civil operations were formalised with the construction of a permanent civil enclave. In terms of passenger traffic, the airport typically ranks outside the top fifty busiest airports in India; for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it handled approximately 143,622 passengers, reflecting its status as a niche industrial and regional gateway. Key milestones include the inauguration of the current passenger terminal in 2006, which expanded the facility's capacity to handle 150 passengers simultaneously. In early 2024, the airport briefly attained temporary international status to accommodate high-profile global traffic for major corporate events, demonstrating its operational flexibility. Jamnagar serves as India’s premier petrochemical hub, housing the world’s largest oil refinery complex. The airport acts as a vital link for corporate personnel while also providing a gateway to the Dwarkadhish Temple and the Marine National Park, supporting both the heavy industrial economy and regional religious tourism.
