Biju Patnaik International Airport, commonly referred to as Bhubaneswar International Airport, is named after the former Chief Minister of Odisha and legendary aviator Biju Patnaik. Originally known simply as Bhubaneswar Airport, it was officially renamed in 1998 to honor the statesman’s legacy in Indian aviation. The facility commenced operations in 1962 and serves as the primary civil aviation gateway for the state, providing essential connectivity to the capital city. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 4.8 million passengers, making it the 17th busiest airport in India. Major infrastructure milestones include the 2013 inauguration of the eco-friendly Terminal 1, which significantly increased domestic capacity, and the attainment of Level 4+ Transition status under the Airport Carbon Accreditation program in 2023. This sustainability achievement is supported by a 4-megawatt on-site solar power plant. As the principal entry point for Odisha’s Temple City, the airport underpins Bhubaneswar’s dual role as a growing information technology center and a major heritage destination. It facilitates access to the regional Golden Triangle, supporting both the city’s business districts and the high volume of pilgrims and tourists visiting nearby sites such as Puri and Konark.
