Veer Surendra Sai Airport, officially known by its IATA code JRG, serves as the primary aviation gateway to Western Odisha. Originally known as Jharsuguda Airport, the facility was renamed in November 2018 to honor the legendary Odia freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai. The airport was inaugurated on September 22, 2018, having been developed on the site of a former World War II-era airstrip that had remained largely abandoned since India's independence. It currently stands as the second busiest commercial airport in Odisha after Bhubaneswar. In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, the airport handled 313,381 passengers, reflecting a significant year-on-year growth of over 33 percent. Key milestones in its development include the 2018 opening of its 5,500-square-meter passenger terminal and a major capacity enhancement project initiated in 2024 to double its peak-hour handling capacity to 540 passengers. Additionally, the installation of an Instrument Landing System has enabled critical night and all-weather operations. Jharsuguda is widely recognized as the Power House of Odisha due to its status as a major industrial hub for the coal, steel, and cement sectors, hosting giants like Vedanta and Mahanadi Coalfields. The airport supports this role by providing essential connectivity for business travelers and technical experts, facilitating the region's rapid industrial and economic expansion.
