Swami Vivekananda Airport, officially renamed from Raipur Airport in January 2012, honors the renowned spiritual leader who spent two years of his adolescence in the city. While the airfield has historical roots dating back several decades, its modern infrastructure was established with the inauguration of a new integrated terminal in November 2012. According to Airports Authority of India statistics for the 2023-24 fiscal year, it is the 27th busiest airport in India, handling approximately 2.5 million passengers annually. Significant milestones in its development include the 2017 commissioning of a 1.1 megawatt solar power plant to enhance sustainability and its recognition in the 2018-19 National Tourism Awards as the best airport in the Rest of India category. The airport serves as a critical gateway for Raipur, which functions as a major administrative, educational, and industrial hub for the steel, coal, and power sectors.
