Hindon Airport, Ghaziabad

Hindon Airport, officially known as the Hindon Civil Enclave, is named after the Hindon River that flows through the region. It operates within the premises of the Hindon Air Force Station, which is recognized as the largest air base in Asia. The civil terminal was inaugurated on March 8, 2019, to serve as a secondary airport for the National Capital Region, specifically designed to alleviate the heavy passenger load at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi rather than replacing an older facility. Due to its status as a regional facility focused on the UDAN scheme, it does not currently feature in the top rankings of Indian airports by passenger traffic and lacks a global ranking. During the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 12,944 passengers, reflecting its specialized role in regional connectivity. Key milestones include the rapid completion of the passenger terminal in early 2019, which was constructed by the Airports Authority of India in a record time of roughly four months, and the expansion of commercial operations in August 2023 with the introduction of new regional routes. Ghaziabad serves as a critical industrial and manufacturing hub within Uttar Pradesh, housing significant steel, electronics, and textile sectors. The airport supports this economic role by providing direct regional connectivity to emerging business centers, facilitating efficient travel for professionals and logistics within the northern Indian industrial corridor.
