The facility traces its origins back to the 1930s when it was established as a military airfield during the British Raj, eventually transitioning to civil operations without replacing any prior facility. In the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport was ranked as the 58th busiest in India by the Airports Authority of India, handling approximately 446,140 passengers, though it does not hold a significant global ranking. A major milestone in its development occurred on March 10, 2024, with the inauguration of a new terminal building costing roughly 450 crore rupees, which increased the airport's peak hour capacity to 800 passengers. Other significant upgrades include the extension of the runway to 2,750 meters to accommodate narrow-body aircraft and the installation of a one-megawatt solar power plant as part of its sustainability initiatives. As a vital transit point, the airport supports Jabalpur’s role as a major gateway to India’s premier tiger reserves, including Kanha and Bandhavgarh National Parks, as well as the geological wonders of Bhedaghat. Furthermore, it facilitates the city’s function as an administrative and industrial center, particularly for the defense manufacturing sector and the regional high court.
