Formally known as Maa Danteshwari Airport, the facility was renamed on September 21, 2020, to honor the presiding deity of the Bastar region, having previously operated simply as Jagdalpur Airport. While the site has historical roots as a basic airstrip dating back to 1939, it officially commenced scheduled commercial operations under the federal UDAN regional connectivity scheme on September 21, 2020, following an upgrade that did not replace an existing airport. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-24 fiscal year, the airport handled 55,019 passengers, a figure that places it as a regional facility outside the country’s top fifty busiest airports and without a global traffic ranking. Significant milestones in its development include its 2019 upgrade to a 3C category airfield and the 2020 inauguration of a modern passenger terminal, which enabled the operation of 72-seater ATR-72 aircraft connecting the region to Raipur and Hyderabad. As the administrative headquarters of the Bastar district, Jagdalpur serves as the primary gateway for tribal heritage tourism and natural attractions like the Chitrakote Falls. The airport supports this role by providing vital air connectivity to the remote Bastar division, facilitating both industrial growth and tourism by bridging the geographical gap with major Indian metropolitan centers.
