Rajahmundry Airport, officially identified by its IATA code RJA, serves the city of Rajamahendravaram in the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. While the state government has proposed renaming the facility after the freedom fighter and former Chief Minister Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, it remains officially recognized as Rajahmundry Airport. The site originated as a British-era airfield during World War II and was later revitalized for commercial use in the 1980s under Vayudoot service. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport ranked as the 61st busiest in the country, handling approximately 428,294 passengers. Key milestones in its development include the 2012 inauguration of a modern passenger terminal and the 2019 completion of a runway extension to 3,125 meters, which allowed for the operation of larger narrow-body aircraft like the Airbus A320. In December 2023, a foundation stone was laid for a major 350-crore terminal expansion project aimed at increasing the facility's annual capacity to 2.1 million passengers. As the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh, Rajahmundry serves as a primary hub for the region's floriculture industry and Godavari river tourism. The airport facilitates this role by connecting business travelers to the Kadiyam nurseries and providing access for pilgrims visiting the city’s historic temples and Pushkaram ghats.
