Vijayawada Airport, located in Gannavaram, was officially proposed to be renamed Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Amaravati Airport by the state government in 2017 to honor the former Chief Minister and the proximity to the state’s capital. Originally established as a military airbase during World War II, the facility transitioned to civilian operations in the post-war era without replacing a prior airport. According to Airports Authority of India statistics for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport ranks as the 41st busiest in the country, handling approximately 1.25 million passengers annually, though it does not yet feature in global traffic rankings. Significant milestones include the 2017 inauguration of an interim terminal building designed to handle 2 million annual passengers and the 2017 Union Cabinet decision to grant the airport international status. Additionally, a major runway extension to 3,360 meters was completed in 2019, enabling the landing of wide-body aircraft. As the primary aviation gateway for Andhra Pradesh’s commercial capital and the Amaravati capital region, the airport serves as a critical link for the city’s industrial, agricultural, and political sectors. It supports Vijayawada’s role as a major trading hub and a starting point for tourists visiting religious and heritage landmarks such as the Kanaka Durga Temple and Undavalli Caves.
