Kadapa Airport, identified by the IATA code CDP, takes its name from the city of Kadapa in Andhra Pradesh. Historically known as Cuddapah Airport, it has maintained its geographical naming since its inception, though the surrounding district was renamed YSR District in 2010. The facility was originally established in 1953 but underwent significant redevelopment to meet modern standards, officially reopening for scheduled commercial operations on June 7, 2015. It did not replace an existing facility but rather upgraded a long-dormant airstrip to serve the Rayalaseema region. In terms of passenger traffic, it remains a smaller domestic hub; for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, it ranked approximately 105th among Indian airports, handling 64,528 passengers, and does not feature in global rankings. Significant milestones include the 2015 inauguration of the new terminal building, which has a peak hour capacity of 100 passengers, and the 2021 completion of a runway extension from 1,722 meters to 2,500 meters. This upgrade, alongside the installation of night landing facilities, allows the airport to accommodate larger narrow-body aircraft. Airlines such as IndiGo currently provide scheduled services connecting the city to major regional centers. As a vital link for the region, the airport supports Kadapa’s status as an industrial and mineral hub, famous for its limestone and barytes exports. It also serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the Gandikota canyon and the historic Vontimitta temple, facilitating essential connectivity for both business and religious travel.
