Kurnool Airport, officially designated as Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy Airport, was named in 2021 to honor the 19th-century freedom fighter who led an early rebellion against British rule; it was previously known as Orvakal Airport during its development phase. The facility was inaugurated on March 25, 2021, and commenced commercial operations on March 28, 2021. As a greenfield project, it did not replace an existing airport but was established to provide the district with its first scheduled air connectivity. According to Airports Authority of India statistics for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, the airport handled 22,233 passengers, placing it among the smaller regional hubs in India with no significant global traffic ranking. Key milestones include its classification as a Category 3C airport and its rapid construction timeline, which saw the terminal and 2,000-meter runway completed in approximately 18 months. The airport is a vital component of the Regional Connectivity Scheme, with carriers such as IndiGo facilitating services to major cities like Bangalore and Chennai. Kurnool serves as the administrative gateway to the Rayalaseema region and was the former capital of Andhra State. By providing proximity to the Orvakal Industrial Hub and major pilgrimage sites such as the Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple and Ahobilam, the airport supports the city’s industrial expansion and its role as a primary transit point for visitors to the ancient Belum Caves.
