Tirupati Airport, also referred to as Renigunta Airport due to its geographical location, serves as the primary aviation portal to the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. The facility has retained its original name since it was established in 1971 to improve regional connectivity, and it did not replace any prior airfield. According to Airports Authority of India data for the 2023-24 fiscal year, the airport handled approximately 944,356 passengers, placing it among the top fifty busiest airports in the country. A significant milestone in its development was the October 2015 inauguration of the integrated Garuda Terminal, a reinforced glass and steel structure designed to accommodate 700 peak-hour passengers. The airport has also prioritized sustainability, commissioning a 1-megawatt solar power plant in 2017 to offset its carbon footprint, and it received the Best Tourist Friendly Airport award at the 2015-16 National Tourism Awards. As the main gateway to the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, the airport is vital to Tirupati’s role as a preeminent global religious and heritage destination. Furthermore, it facilitates the city’s growth as an industrial and educational hub, supporting the nearby Electronic Manufacturing Clusters and the Sri City special economic zone by providing essential logistics and business travel infrastructure.
